How the American Cancer Society Finds Work-Life Balance

From constant overtime to real flexibility

For years, chronic overtime was simply part of the job for the American Cancer Society’s payroll team. That changed when the organization went live with Workday payroll and OSV simultaneously on Christmas Eve 2023. OSV now supports the American Cancer Society’s payroll administration through payroll tax compliance, garnishment administration, and employee disbursements handled by OSV NetPay.

The implementation itself felt less like managing a vendor and more like adding an extension of the team. OSV's incremental, baby-steps approach meant Tina and her team never felt buried, learning each process before the next one was introduced.

Mandatory overtime disappeared. Payroll processing days that once required all-hands-on-deck now run smoothly, even when someone needs to step out. Most importantly, as Tina puts it, her team finally has “time with our family that we should have had all along.”

Proactive support, not reactive fixes

The working relationship between OSV and the American Cancer Society has been defined by proactive partnership rather than reactive problem-solving. Tina has a dedicated tax manager who schedules quarterly meetings and brings potential improvements to the table before they become issues. “He always brings things that we could do a better job on,” she notes. “Again, try to prevent errors and have things processed smoothly.”

That same proactive approach extends to garnishment administration. Some garnishments route directly to OSV without Tina ever needing to touch them, while others can be submitted through a simple ticket and are handled quickly, with documentation loaded directly into Workday.

Year-end processing, once one of the most demanding stretches of the year, has become significantly easier. For Tina’s team, that means less time buried in payroll tax compliance and more time for everything else.
