Our new year hope: it will be happier
Dear valued customer,
“Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering, ‘It will be happier.’”
Alfred Lord Tennyson attached this line to Robin Hood in his play, The Foresters.
The original context related to one’s birthday as the close of one year and the beginning of the next. But it’s a fitting quotation for the beginning of a new calendar year as well!
A new year brings the promise of new relationships and new opportunities; new meaningful experiences.
The beginning of a calendar year provides a chance to reexamine our priorities while deepening relationships and rebuilding bridges.
Hope, aspiration, fresh starts, personal growth.
But in most cases, these optimistic ideals will not happen automatically. They usually involve some sort of goal setting and change in behavior to achieve the results we want.
This notion that life doesn’t improve automatically explains the origin of the “new year’s resolution.” A resolution suggests that we have some capacity to determine our changes, our own happiness.
And while I’m not a frequent practitioner of this annual ritual, I routinely set short- and long-term goals that relate to my own personal growth and happiness, as well as that of my loved ones.
What would you like to be different by the very end of 2022?
New year’s resolutions are usually couched as end goals or results:
- Lose 25 pounds (this year)
- Clean out garage and closets (this year)
- Take family on vacation (this year)
But adding bulleted steps to support each of these goals may prevent us from realizing next Thanksgiving that we have a lot of weight to lose during our last-minute vacation in December. For example:
- Lose 25 pounds
- Walk 7,000 steps each day
- Restrict restaurant take-out to one meal per week
- Clean out garage and closets
- Complete bedroom closet by the end of March
- Organize NW corner of garage by the end of June
- Take family on vacation
- Have PTO approved by the end of February
- By the end of April, book summer vacation
- Save $200 every month to absorb costs associated with the trip
These near-term steps are designed to help us accomplish our overall resolutions so that we end the year feeling accomplished instead of defeated.
