Not a One-Size-Fits-All Pandemic

Even though COVID-19 is a global phenomenon, our individual experiences and challenges make this anything but a “one-size-fits-all” pandemic.

Certainly we’re going through this event as a species, as citizens of certain countries, and as employees of particular organizations. But we’re also undergoing unique experiences as individuals. Let’s briefly explore the many contexts you might relate to when it comes to your pandemic experience.

From Collective to Individual Experiences

The broadest shared experience is the human one, and most everyone on the planet has been affected by COVID-19 to one degree or another.

But we’re also facing this global situation at a country level, as individual nations cover the spectrum on how they are fairing with regard to infection rates and impact.

And within countries, states. And within states, cities. And within cities, communities and people groups. The impact can be traced all the way down to the individual level and how each person is uniquely affected and responding.

And then there’s the corporate front and how COVID-19 is affecting each company differently with regard to both infection rate and revenue.

Your Company’s Experience(s)

Let’s think deeper about your company during this present pandemic. Is it really a uniform experience you’re having, or is it a complex web of group and individual ones?

Is your sales team’s experience the same as your HR department’s? Is your European division experiencing COVID-19 the same as your Canadian division?

Probably not.

What about your employees who were accustomed to commuting to the office every day to sit shoulder to shoulder with their colleagues? Their transition has been markedly different from those who were already working remotely prior to our global situation.

Are your furloughed employees having the same COVID-19 experience as your non-furloughed employees?

Not even close.

Your company is facing a collective reality, for sure. But you also have groups and departments and individuals who are having experiences that differ from others—even others who work in the same company.

It’s important for all of us to appreciate and respect one another’s individual challenges during this unprecedented season. And if you are in leadership or work in your company’s HR department, it’s paramount that you are aware of and sensitive to these unique employee experiences.

This is not a one-size-fits-all pandemic.

But we also mean that we’re here for the many “yous” that make up your company, each of whom is processing this new reality differently.
