Is your calendar filled with meetings or people?
Dear valued customer,
A few weeks ago I attended an in-person meeting over breakfast with a colleague. It had been more than a year since we had seen each other in person. We caught up on life and then were engaged over the topic at hand, when I suddenly realized that I hadn’t looked at the time.
When I did, I was surprised to learn that more than an hour had passed.
If this meeting had been virtual, I would have been keenly aware that our meeting had an expiration date that we dare not exceed. And that’s when it hit me:
Have I filled my calendar with virtual meetings or with people?
An Important Distinction
Obviously, the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive—meetings OR people. It is possible to have meetings WITH people, but we have to be intentional if we want to ensure we remember that all of our meetings involve living, breathing people.
How do we do it? Here are a couple of tips.
- Be human. Without abandoning the purpose of the meeting and its agenda, find ways to be real with your colleagues. Share a couple of sentences about a recent weekend or your upcoming dinner plans. Tell a quick story about your kids or pets. Briefly share a personal challenge you recently overcame. Avoid sharing anything overly dramatic or personal during a team meeting unless the context calls for it. You don’t want to sidetrack the meeting’s purpose.
- Plan to connect. If you’re in charge of the meeting agenda and can cover it sufficiently while leaving a bit of time to connect at the end, do it. “Hey friends, that’s all I needed for this meeting. I see we still have eight minutes left and I’m sure some of you have to bounce. That’s understandable. But if you can stay, I know it’s been a challenging week and I’d love to spend a few minutes hearing how everyone’s doing.”
We’re in the People Business
Perhaps some of us have allowed business objectives and meetings to overshadow the people factor in the workplace. While we’ve always known that employees are any company’s most important assets, the current global situation has revealed that our attention must be drawn to the humanity behind the business.
OneSource Virtual knows that your company prioritizes your people every day. And we want to help you with this in any way we can. So if there are specific ways we can help you or your employees, please reach out to let us know how.
Thank you for placing your trust in OSV. You remain at the center of everything we do.
