A brief mental exercise that invites reflection

Dear valued customer,

Okay. Push back from your desk or your dining room table-slash-workstation for a 2-minute break to participate in this mental exercise. Many of you are in Human Resources, and this is a very, very human exercise.

If the average lifespan is roughly 80 years, let’s plot 1 entire lifespan into the length of 1 average day. Using round numbers, let’s equate one’s birth with 6:00am—probably about the time many of you woke up this morning.

If you are born at 6:00am on this “life-day,” then your 80th birthday will occur at 10:00pm—probably about the time many of you will turn in tonight. Every hour in this day equals 5 years of your life, every 12 minutes equals 1 year, every minute represents 1 month, and every 2 seconds represents 1 day.

The “life-day” looks something like this:

Life Timeline

What time is it for you?

If you were to plot your life on the “life-day” as we’ve described it, what time of day would represent your current age? For me, it’s 3:36pm.

Your turn.

Use the chart below to determine your specific time of day based on your age. Find the time on the right that aligns with the age on the left that is closest to yours, and then add or subtract 12 minutes per year older or younger you are (every 12 minutes equals 1 year).

Birth 6:00am
5yrs 7:00am
10yrs 8:00am
15yrs 9:00am
20yrs 10:00am
25yrs 11:00am
30yrs 12:00pm
35yrs 1:00pm
40yrs 2:00pm
45yrs 3:00pm
50yrs 4:00pm
55yrs 5:00pm
60yrs 6:00pm
65yrs 7:00pm
70yrs 8:00pm
75yrs 9:00pm
80yrs 10:00pm

If you’re 33 years old, it’s 12:36pm in your life-day. If you’re 49 years old, it’s 3:48pm. If you’re 61 years old, it’s 6:12pm. If you’re 77 years old, it’s 9:24pm. And so on.

What time is it for you?

After you’ve determined what time of day it is in your particular “life-day,” reflect on it for a moment. How does it make you feel when you realize how much of your day has already been spent and how much (or little) of your day remains?

And remember: if the sun hasn’t set on you yet—and if you’re reading this email, it hasn’t—there’s still time left in your day to continue doing meaningful things!

A human exercise for those of us in the people business

Of course, none of us have been given a promise that we’re going to see 10:00pm, so don’t grow too comfortable and let this exercise become an excuse for procrastination.

All of us are given only one day. But while some are privileged to enjoy fuller, longer days, others will experience tragically short ones.

Take the present pandemic, for example. Some will have their “life-day” tragically cut short due to COVID-19. Others will see the sun set prematurely on friends and loved ones.

On the other hand, we all know people who are “staying up late.” If you’re 90 years old, it’s midnight (look who’s been eating their vegetables!). The sun set on my grandmother’s life a few years ago at the age of nearly 105—just before 3:00am in her life-day.

After you’ve calculated your time, do the same for some of your family members. Next, calculate the time of day for some of your co-workers, but only if you can do so without being tempted with insensitive comments to or about any protected age groups (you’re welcome, HR!).

I warned you that this would be a human exercise. A very human exercise indeed for those of us fortunate enough to serve in the people business.

Thank You
