Culture in Action: OSV Profile – Sonya Unger

Ever since she was young, Sonya Unger has wanted to help others, an impulse that stems in part from her own childhood experiences.

“Because I had a lot of medical problems when I was little, I was in and out of the hospital a lot,” she explains. “I always admired the nurses who took care of me, and I just knew I was going to grow up to be one.”

Sonya did eventually work as a nurse’s aid, but with a growing family to care for, she eventually left nursing behind for an administrative assistant job with Cigna, one of the leading providers of health insurance. That’s when she had an epiphany.

“I realized I liked being part of making sure someone got their prescription or was enrolled,” she says. Now, as a senior benefits analyst with 18 years of combined experience in benefits and human resources outsourcing, she’s still driven by that same impulse to help.

“I genuinely care about people,” she says. “I don’t like to see them struggle. If there’s something I can do to help, I want to do it.” When she thinks about which of OneSource Virtual’s core values resonate with her the most, two come to mind—OSV’s first value (unquestioned integrity) and OSV’s eighth value (seek the best for others).

“I strive to go above and beyond for our customers to show them they’re important,” she says, adding that her personal philosophy is to do what’s right, even if no one’s looking.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Sonya works remotely from Georgetown, located 30 miles outside of Texas’ capital, Austin. When she’s not helping OSV give customers a superior experience, she enjoys working on cars with her husband. She also loves music—listening to it, but also singing.

“I’m not a professional by any means,” she says, “but it just has a way of healing you.”
